About Dr. Gertler

“Larry Gertler is technically superb in his eclectic blend of body work, but beyond the physical, he seems to be gifted with a spiritual commitment that saturates, possibly even guides, his work. I feel fortunate to have walked into his office at a point in my life when I was ready to establish a foundation of physical health to support a new level of spiritual emergence.”

—N.H., Bodyworker

Larry J. Gertler, M.Ed., D.C., is a chiropractic kinesiologist and the founder of Advanced Chiropractic Center in Oakland, California. Dr. Gertler has practiced chiropractic and holistic healing for over twenty-five years, and has been a health educator since 1976.

Dr. Gertler studied the art and science of chiropractic at National College of Chiropractic in Lombard, Illinois. While a student, he wrote the first textbook on extremity technique, Illustrated Manual of Extravertebral Technique for Students and Doctors, and its companion volume, Supplement: Lower Extremity Technique. These texts pioneered the teaching of diagnosis and treatment of sports injuries, and were adopted for class use at National College of Chiropractic and several other chiropractic colleges.

Licensed by the state of California in 1977, he taught extremity technique at Los Angeles College of Chiropractic for over two years, while also studying Applied Kinesiology in San Diego with David Walther. During this time he completed 250 hours of training in kinesiology. Over the next twenty years, he continued his study of advanced kinesiology, completing over 1000 hours of additional training with diplomates of Applied Kinesiology and alternative kinesiology teachers.

His teachers include George Goodheart, D.C., Victor Frank, D.C., Carl Ferreri, D.C., Scott Walker, D.C., Devi Nambudripad, M.D., D.C., L.Ac., Sandra Fico, D.C., Fred Ulan, D.C., Kerry Bone, Dip. Phyto., and John Diamond, M.D. From 1997–1999 he assisted Tim Francis, D.C., DIBAK in teaching the updated 300-hour course in Applied Kinesiology in Santa Clara, CA. In 2002–2003, he assisted Walter Schmitt, D.C., DIBAK in teaching the 100-hour course in Applied Kinesiology in Los Angeles, CA.

Alternative Kinesiologies and Approaches

Always thirsting for knowledge, Dr. Gertler synthesizes a broad range of approaches to healing in his practice.

  • He has studied Total Body Modification (T.B.M.) with Victor Frank, D.C. since 1979, and Neural Organizing Technique (N.O.T.) with Carl Ferreri, D.C. since the late 1980s.

  • Since 1988 he has studied and practiced Scott Walker’s Neuro-Emotional Technique (N.E.T.), and has participated in most of the advanced N.E.T. seminars.

  • In 1999 he was certified in Nambudripad’s Allergy Elimination Technique (N.A.E.T.) and is a regular participant in the advanced N.A.E.T. seminars. At the 8th Annual N.A.E.T. Symposium in July 2002, he presented a paper on his Simplified Multiple-Interval Allergy Reduction Technique (S.M.A.R.T.).

  • From 1999 to the present, he has studied Functional Biochemistry and Nutrition with Christopher R. Astill-Smith, D.O., DIBAK.

  • In 2001, he was introduced to Neuro Somatic Programming (N.S.P.) by Sandra Fico, D.C.

  • From 2002 to the present, he has studied Nutritional Response Testing (N.R.T.) with Fred Ulan, D.C., N.C.

A Holistic Approach

Nationally renowned in the field of Applied Kinesiology, Dr. Gertler uses kinesiology as the clinical basis for a unified holistic approach to diagnosing and healing that integrates structural, biochemical/nutritional, and mental/emotional elements. He combines today’s scientific breakthroughs and new wisdoms with the ancient healing arts in unique ways that provide simultaneous relief for the mind, body, and spirit.

He has devised muscle testing formats to quickly test Chinese metaphysical body types (Earth, Fire, Water, Air) as well as the 25 metabolic body types described by Carolyn Mein, D.C., in her book Different Bodies, Different Diets. He skillfully integrates years of study to produce a unique treatment plan for each patient. His perspective is informed by five years of spiritual training at the Wingsong School for Mastery of Life, and daily practice and reflection.
